Forests cover around 30% of the world’s land area and, according to the think tank, Climate Focus, an area the size of the UK is lost to deforestation each year.
When a tree is cut down, the carbon it has been storing is released back into the atmosphere, which leads to increases in the global temperature.
2023 was confirmed as the world’s hottest year on record by the EU’s climate service, with temperatures about 1.48C warmer than the long-term average before humans started burning fossil fuels. Analysis by the BBC shows that almost every day since July has seen a new global air temperature high for the time of year and Antarctic sea ice is now at a ‘mind-blowing’ low warm warn the National Snow and Ice Data Center.
And because of deforestation, an estimated 1 million species are threatened with extinction.
At COP26, world leaders agreed to end deforestation by 2030, this would save as much carbon as taking all the world’s cars off the road.
The Greener Earth Project was founded in 2020. Here’s what we have achieved in the past three years. We have worked with community groups and tree planting companies to plant trees around the planet.
That’s 2,232,469.96 kg of potential CO2e sequestered each year, based on an average 21.77 kg mature tree annually.
Our main areas of planting have been in Madagascar, Mozambique, Tanzania and the UK. Explore the interactive map to find out more.

Our vision is to plant 1 million trees by the end of 2025.
We plan to expand our network of business partners, which will allow businesses of all sizes to work with us to help plant trees, allowing us to receive more donations which will help us reach our goal of 1 million trees. These trees will be planted with our partner in Tanzania, a country that has been affected by logging, agricultural expansion and overexploitation causing a loss in biodiversity.
However, we recognise that whilst most businesses do genuinely want to do more for the planet, some might want to plant for the wrong reasons and therefore greenwashing. As such, our team will qualify each business before onboarding to ensure their planting for the right reasons.
We will also continue to offer our monthly memberships for individuals, this allows members to plant a set number of trees each month depending on their subscription. These trees will be planted via our new reforestation partner at their site in Kenya.
Reforestation in Kenya is important because the country currently has one of the lowest forest cover percentages, with only 8% cover compared to the global average of 30%. A combination of logging, charcoal burning, and illegal settlements have all contributed to the loss of trees.
As a result, Kenya has committed to its reforestation, looking to achieve a 10% forest cover.
As well as planting trees, all of the money we raise helps to provide work to the local community, and monitoring of the site after the planting has finished, to ensure it stays healthy and safe.
