Year in Review 2025

Impact report

The problem

We all know deforestation is a massive issue, swathes and swathes of forest are cut down every year. It is estimated that forest cover 32% of the global land area, and in the UK, forest cover was 13.5% of total land area.

There have been some positive steps reducing deforestation, the UN Global Forest Assessment (UN FAO) estimates net forest loss between 2015 and 2025 fell to 4.12 million hectares, down from 10.7 million in the 90s. And in Brazil, deforestation dropped nearly one-third between 2023 and 2024.

When a tree is cut down, the carbon it has been storing is released back into the atmosphere, which leads to increases in the global temperature.

2024 was the first year to pass the 1.5c global warming limit, this is despite world leaders agreeing at COP21 in 2015 that they would try to avoid this, and this means that the last 10 years are now the warmest 10 years on record. Because of deforestation, an estimated 1 million species are threatened with extinction.

At COP26, world leaders agreed to end deforestation by 2030, this would save as much carbon as taking all the world’s cars off the road.

What we've done so far

The Greener Earth Project was founded in 2020. Here’s what we have achieved in the past five years. We have worked with community groups and tree planting companies to plant trees around the planet.

Trees planted
0

That’s  2,672,115.11 kg of potential CO2e sequestered each year, based on an average 21.77 kg mature tree annually.

The work described in this report was funded by generous donations made by our business partners, as well as monthly subscriptions from individual members. Here, we recognise all of our business partners, as well as one-off donations over £100. We thank all of our donors for their support!

Our work (so far)…

The mission for The Greener Earth Project is to plant 1 million trees, and in order for us to reach that target we set ourselves smaller goals each year, smaller chunks of the pie as it were. Here’s our 2025 goals, and how we got on with them.

1. To grow our community of business partners

Our aim was to double the number of businesses we work with from 14 to 28. We ended 2025 with 23 business partners in total! Whilst we were short of our target by 5, it’s still an impressive growth of 9 partners in one year, so we consider this a resounding success!

2. To plant 300,000 trees

We ended 2025, with 122,743 trees funded, so quite a long way off the target for the year. We always knew 300,000 would be a stretch when we set it as we wanted to aim for what we consider to be a milestone target.
However, funding the planting of nearly 123,000 is still impressive and was an increase of 13,742 from the year before, something we’re incredibly proud of.

3. To retain and reinforce a budding team

Volunteers are our lifeblood, as a 100% volunteer led team we simply could not function without the efforts of our amazing volunteer team. We grew our volunteer team by 15 people, filling some really key roles in our fundraising and marketing teams that will help to grow the impact we have.
Further to this, we celebrated volunteering milestones within our existing team, with some volunteers having been with us for 4, or 5 years! We carried on our “Star Volunteer Award” to recognise excellence with our team, and started a partnership Charity Worker Discounts to offer discounts to our team as an added incentive for volunteering with us.
